In photography, we have the chance to take on a project that is entirely our own decision, we are free to
capture whatever topic or theme that have always found interesting or have always wanted to pursue.
I have always had an interest in the are of nude photography, my favorite photographers are Lucien Clergue,
Edward Weston, Nan Goldin, Francesca Woodman,Sarah Moon, Bill Brandt, the list is endless. I just found that I began to
become interested in photographing my own body in self portraits and decided that I would like to give
it a shot at photographing other nudes.
So my project is really inspired by Francesca Woodman but also by a new photographer of today; Jordan
Sullivan. He is a photographer from Texas who lives in L.A, he seemed to come on to the art and photography
scene around 2011. His work involves images of beautiful females of all shapes and sizes, but have this dreamy
and surreal atmosphere within them, he compliments their bodies with images of natural objects, ranging from
leaves, branches burning or a breathtaking landscape. These diptychs really work and are coherent with one another.
I based my images on his work but also on various images I came across on Flickr, taking notes on the
compositions and locations of the models. But my project has taken on a theme that I had not expected,
the models in the project are just two models; myself and my best friend(and cousin). I have taken this
information and formed it into a form of youth themed project. If you were to look at the recent film
"Boyhood", it can be seen as a form of inspiration also. Both my cousin and I have grown up together with
only a week between our birthdays, we have always been in each others lives. So it is interesting to
document and stage images of us against white walls and windows and in water. It gives it a continuous
and fluid theme in each image.
I am really enjoying this project as i have complete artistic freedom but I also take advice and comments from my
lecturer Tom and from others in my course, it really helps with the direction in which I should go with terms of shoot ideas or Photoshop techniques. Its really good to have those people!
I can't wait to have the project complete as it is one that I have enjoyed and can be really proud of. I am looking forward to printing the images but also for creating my own photography book, a nude photography book, which I think will
be pretty fab to own. Not only can I have a lovely portfolio to look at but I can also look back on my self-portraits to my youth when i'm that elegant grandmother in the future. Naturally.
